Gingival Enlargements
Gingival Enlargement
Gingival enlargement in dogs and cats refers to an abnormal overgrowth of the gums, often causing swelling and protrusion of the gum tissue around the teeth. This condition can be caused by various factors, including inflammation, medications, or systemic diseases. It may lead to difficulty eating, oral discomfort, and increased susceptibility to dental disease. Treatment depends on the underlying cause and may involve addressing the primary condition, dental cleaning, and sometimes surgical intervention to reduce the excess gum tissue and restore oral health. It is also common to biopsy these areas to make sure there isn’t something more concerning going on (such as an oral mass).
